Gene - Wikipedia
In biology, a gene is a sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA that codes for a molecule that has a function. During gene expression, the DNA is first copied into RNA.The RNA can be directly functional or be the intermediate template for a protein that performs a function. The transmission of genes to an organism's offspring is the basis of the inheritance of phenotypic trait.
What is a gene? - Genetics Home Reference - NIH
A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. Some genes act as instructions to make molecules called proteins. However, many genes do not code for proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases.

Gene has an open access mirror journal Gene: X, sharing the same aims and scope, editorial team, submission system and rigorous peer review. Gene publishes papers that focus on the regulation, expression, function and evolution of genes in all biological contexts, including all prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, as well as viruses.
gene | Definition, Structure, Expression, & Facts ...
Gene: Gene, unit of hereditary information that occupies a fixed position on a chromosome. Genes achieve their effects by directing the synthesis of proteins. They are composed of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), except in some viruses, which have genes consisting of a closely related compound called ribonucleic acid (RNA).

Gene | Definition of Gene by Merriam-Webster
Gene definition is - a specific sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA that is located usually on a chromosome and that is the functional unit of inheritance controlling the transmission and expression of one or more traits by specifying the structure of a particular polypeptide and especially a protein or controlling the function of other genetic material.
Gene - Biology-Online Dictionary | Biology-Online Dictionary
A gene is the fundamental, physical, and functional unit of heredity. It is because a gene is comprised of nucleotides (on a specific site on a chromosome) that is responsible for the physical and heritable characteristics or phenotype of an organism. It therefore specifies the structure of a protein, and an RNA molecule. The genes make up the ...
